113: Azkals Make History with Highest FIFA Ranking
Following the historic qualification to the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019, the Azkals jumped 9 places to 113th overall in the latest FIFA rankings update last Thursday, April 12, 2018.
This latest FIFA ranking is the highest the Philippines has ever achieved in history. The country’s highest ranking was 115 last May 2016.
The win over Tajikistan last March 27, 2018, which sent the Azkals through to their maiden AFC Asian Cup appearance, was one of the reasons for the huge rankings boost.
Team manager Dan Palami was cautiously optimistic about the Azkals’ latest ranking.
“The [latest FIFA] rankings just goes to show how far we’ve come,” Palami said, “it also shows how far we can still go.” The 113th rank bodes well for the team as they begin preparations for the AFF Suzuki Cup to be held in November, and more importantly, the AFC Asian Cup in January next year.
Palami also thanked the fans and supporters for their never-ending support for the Azkals.
“Without the fans, we won’t be where we are now. Their presence in the stands and even online especially during the match against Tajikistan really made a big difference,” added Palami.
“Whatever we have achieved, it is all for the continuous development of Philippine football and love for the country.”
