Schrock: There are Always Surprises in Football

Azkals midfielder and vice-captain Stephan Schrock is adamant that the Philippines will cause a stir in their opening match of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 against Korea Republic tonight.

Missing out on the qualifiers where the Philippines finished on top of Group F, Schrock has nothing but respect for this team that has pulled out all stops to qualify for Asia’s showpiece event.

“We don’t have the easiest team to start the Asian Cup but we have worked hard during the past two years to reach this stage,” said Schrock. “We are grateful and happy to represent the Philippines in the biggest tournament in Asia. It will be a tough game for us (vs Korea Republic), but there are surprises everywhere and we’re willing to give everyone.”

Having been part of several highs and lows for Philippine football, Schrock knows that each game, whether they win or lose, there’s always a lesson to be pick up and rooms for improvement.

“There’s always something to learn whether you win or lose, you take something from each game. We won’t be the favorites tomorrow, but we will have answers on that. To improve is a lot, we’ll take it step by step and we will do a good job tomorrow no matter what the outcome.”

Schrock, will not be alone on this journey as the entire squad led by head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and assistants Scott Cooper, Chris Greatwich, and Steve Marsella will be behind the team as they progress through the tournament.

“We have a good coach and a good coaching staff. They’re doing their homework and are very professional with us,” continued Schrock. “I said in the beginning there are always surprises in football and maybe we can make the first big upset against Korea.”
